Definition: MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet, also translated as Chemical Safety Data Sheet or Chemical Safety Information Sheet. It is a document used by chemical manufacturers and importers to explain the physicochemical properties of chemicals (such as pH value, flash point, flammability, reactivity, etc.) and the potential hazards they may pose to users' health (such as carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, etc.).
An MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is a comprehensive legal document that chemical manufacturers or distributors are legally required to provide to their customers, detailing the characteristics of a chemical substance. It provides information on sixteen aspects, including the chemical's physical and chemical properties, flammability and explosive properties, health hazards, safe handling and storage, spill response procedures, first aid measures, and relevant laws and regulations.
Uses: According to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS, also known as the "Purple Book"), Safety Data Sheets (SDS) should be prepared for the following substances and mixtures:
1. Substances and mixtures that meet the harmonized criteria for physical, health, or environmental hazards under the GHS, and all mixtures containing components that meet the criteria for carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, or target organ toxicity, and whose concentrations exceed the critical limits for SDS as specified in the mixture standards.
2. Mixtures that do not meet the criteria for hazard categories but contain certain concentrations of hazardous components may also be required to have an SDS by the competent authority.
From the two points above, it is clear that an MSDS is a technical document used to assess the safety of chemical products. Whether during the manufacturing process or during use, the MSDS is an important reference document. In practice, customers almost always ask for the MSDS when making inquiries. When exporting, shipping companies or airlines will require the MSDS for booking cargo space. It is also required for customs clearance.
Preparation of documents: An MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) contains 16 sections, and not every section needs to be provided by the company, but the following points are mandatory:
1) Product name, recommended uses, and usage limitations;
2) Detailed information of the supplier (including name, address, telephone number, etc.) and emergency contact number;
3) Product composition information, including substance name and Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) registry number;
4) Physical and chemical properties of the product, such as form, color, flash point, boiling point, etc.;
5) The country of export and the required MSDS standards.
In short, provide as much detailed product information and test data as possible; the more comprehensive the information, the more accurate the MSDS will be.
