Shipping From China To North America: USA, Canada & Mexico Guide

Inquire

North America remains one of the largest destinations for Chinese exports. Consumer goods, machinery, electronics, and auto parts move in huge volumes across the Pacific. Whether your cargo is bound for Los Angeles, Vancouver, or Mexico City, here is a practical guide to routes, timing, and customs.

Sea freight: West Coast, East Coast, and Mexico

· FCL (full container load) — the standard for large-volume shippers. 40ft HQ is the most common choice for China–USA trade.

· LCL (less-than-container-load) — cost-effective for smaller shipments. Consolidation warehouses in Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Ningbo serve regular sailings to the West Coast.

Most China–North America sea freight moves through West Coast ports (Los Angeles, Long Beach, Vancouver) and then travels inland by rail. East Coast routing via the Panama Canal is slower but can save inland trucking costs for Midwest and East Coast delivery.

Air freight for urgent cargo

Air freight from China to the USA or Canada takes roughly 4–8 days door-to-door. It is the go-to option for product launches, spare parts, and high-value electronics. Mexico City and Guadalajara also have strong air connections from Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Customs clearance: know the rules

USA customs (CBP) is data-driven. Accurate HS codes, detailed commercial invoices, and proper country-of-origin markings are non-negotiable. ISF (Importer Security Filing) must be filed 24 hours before loading.

Canada (CBSA) requires similar documentation plus GST/HST calculations. Mexico’s customs process has improved but still requires a local customs broker for most commercial shipments. DDP terms are increasingly popular with buyers who want a single all-in price.

Incoterms and DDP

FOB and CIF remain common, but DDP is growing fast for e-commerce and B2B buyers who want predictable landed costs. On the North America lane, DDP means your forwarder handles ocean freight, customs clearance, duties, and final delivery — one invoice, zero surprises.

Bottom line

North America is a mature, high-volume lane — but customs complexity and inland logistics can trip up unprepared shippers. A knowledgeable partner keeps your cargo moving.
